HISTORY

Officially opened in 1934, Harold "Doc" Donnelly purchased and operated Donnelly's Pub in downtown Iowa City. Donnelly's was originally located on Dubuque St. next to the Best Steak House in the area of the Pedestrian Mall that is now the Plaza Centre One Building.

Harold served Donnelly's famous hamburgers and cold beers in pilsner glasses, which he referred to as Dem-O-Crats. Over the 40 years of this continued tradition, Donnelly's became a local landmark.

In 1974, Harold and his family closed the doors to Donnelly's for the last time. The picture on the menu cover was taken only a few days before the wrecking ball knocked down the building to make way for the Plaza Centre One Building.

In 2005, Donnelly's Pub was re-opened in its current location. The business has since been passed to a new owner who proudly runs the pub in the spirit of "Old" Donnelly's. He and the dedidcated staff are honored to have Harold "Doc" Donnelly's picture hanging on the wall and enjoy extending upon Iowa City the tradition of Donnelly's Pub.
